Personal project
The idea
I wanted a smart home that doesn’t depend on someone else’s cloud: everything runs on my own server, and the house tells me what I actually need to know.
What I built
- Home Assistant in Docker on my own Ubuntu server, which also runs my other self-hosted services.
- Front-door camera: a Reolink / ONVIF camera connected to Frigate, which detects people locally instead of sending video to the cloud.
- Doorbell automations: when someone rings, I get a notification with a camera snapshot on my phone.
What I learned
Self-hosting means you’re also the system administrator: networking, Docker, updates and keeping it all running. That experience helped when I set up the domain, HTTPS and automatic deploys for this portfolio.
